It’s been a month since my trip to France for the holidays. A wonderful time that ended with a few days in Paris, a city that never ceases to amaze me by its romantic beauty. The gifts and objects I brought back from my home country brighten up my days with a refined French touch.

This Lanvin clutch for example was very generously given to me by Maman Ritournelle whilst enjoying a mother-daughter shopping session at Le Bon Marché. On top of its sentimental value, I cherish my appropriately-named Happy clutch for its vintage and timeless look. It’s the perfect companion for New York nights, especially for me, a lover of all things Lanvin!

Do you know Mariage Frères? This tea brand has a beautiful store on place de la Madeleine in Paris, very close to Fauchon, Hédiard and Ladurée (which I told you about here). My brother surprised me these two boxes for Christmas. Thé sur le Nil is an incredible blend of green tea, citrus fruit and refined spices. Such a delight to start my day… Merci Marc!

Here are two books on one of the loves of my life: fragrance! I asked for Le Journal d’un Parfumeur by Jean-Claude Ellena for Christmas. I admire the nose of Hermès for the quality and singularity of his creations and take pleasure in discovering his reflections on his art and travels. As for Les Parfums by historian Elisabeth de Feydeau, I purchased it in Saint-Germain after reading beauty journalist Lili Barbery-Coulon’s recommendation on her blog Ma Récréation. The book details in 1,200 pages the history of fragrance with an anthology and writings by major noses.

Some beautiful vintage images to end this post, from the Vogue calendar Maman Ritournelle gave me for Christmas. Didn’t the covers from the 1920s and 1930s look like true little pieces of art?

Voici un mois que je suis rentrée de France, un séjour merveilleux en famille qui s’est terminé par quelques jours à Paris, une ville qui ne cesse de m’éblouir par son romantisme ! Les cadeaux et objets ramenés égaient mon quotidien de manière raffinée et lui apportent une certaine French touch. Cette pochette Lanvin, un modèle (bien nommé) Happy, m’a été offerte par Maman Ritournelle lors d’une virée au Bon Marché. Je l’adore pour son côté vintage et intemporel : l’accessoire parfait pour les soirées new-yorkaises !

Cette couverture vous rappelle quelque chose ? La Parisienne d’Inès de la Fressange bien sûr ! Je vous en avais parlé ici. L’agenda est fidèle à l’esprit piquant du livre avec chaque semaine un bon conseil d’Inès.

Voici deux livres sur l’un des amours de ma vie : le parfum ! J’ai demandé pour Noël le Journal d’un Parfumeur de Jean-Claude Ellena. J’admire le nez d’Hermès pour la qualité et la singularité de ses créations ainsi que sa liberté créative. Après avoir dévoré son ouvrage sur le parfum il y a quelques années, j’ai plaisir à découvrir ses impressions de voyage et réflexions sur son métier. My dear readers, I wish you all a very happy 2012, filled with fun, success and wonderful discoveries! To celebrate, here is a little gem from New York City. Remember the Bergdorf Goodman windows I posted here (Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty) and here (Christmas 2010)? Once again, David Hoey and his team have worked their magic with refined fairy tale images overflowing with details. No wonder passers-by old and young stop in their tracks to marvel at them (making the photographer that I am quite impatient!) The theme for this year? The Carnival of the Animals, a reference to the musical suite by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns.

The fun begins in a shiny cabaret with monkeys, parrots, tortoises and lions making up the Brass Menagerie. The Bergdorf Goodman team used sculptures from the 1970s and a dress designed exclusively by Michelle Obama-favorite Naeem Kahn to create this window.

Let’s leave the dazzling heat of the club for the North Pole garden party, one of my favorite windows.

This window is typically overflowing with details so that the eye always finds something new to feast itself upon. For example, it is only when I bent down that I discovered this servant monkey in the back.

Bubbly, tea, cakes and polar bears (my childhood obsession): what’s not to love?

After cracking the ice, let’s dive into the deep end and admire the mosaics of this Aquarium window. It reminds me of the musical piece of the same name from The Carnival of Animals.

My other favorite window, entirely in shades of black and white apart from the bold red lips and nails of the glamorous teacher.  300 different sheets of paper were necessary for the creation of this class.

And lastly, a mad joiner’s workshop.

Not as spectacular but nonetheless beautiful, the windows on 57^th and 58^th Streets invited us to a fancy gala and to a mysterious photography session.

So this was in my opinion the most memorable holiday decoration in New York this year. What did you enjoy in your own city in terms of Christmas decorations?

Mes chers lecteurs, je vous souhaite une excellente année 2012 en espérant qu’elle a bien démarré ! Pour célébrer, voici une petite merveille de New York. Bergdorf Goodman, ça vous dit quelque chose ? Vous avez déjà admiré les vitrines de ce grand magasin de la Fifth Avenue sur mon blog ici (Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty) et ici (Noël 2010). Une fois de plus, le magicien David Hoey et son équipe ont créé des mises en scènes féeriques foisonnantes de détails qui émerveillent petits et grands. Le thème de cette année ? Le carnaval des animaux, clin d’œil à la suite musicale de Camille Saint-Saëns.

L’aventure commence avec  la ménagerie de cuivre dans son cabaret jazz tout d’or et de plumes vêtu. L’équipe de Bergdorf Goofman a utilisé pour cette mise en scène des oiseaux des tropiques en métal créés dans les années 1970.

Passons de la chaleur langoureuse au froid polaire avec la « North Pole Garden Party », l’une de mes mises en scène préférées. Comme ses voisines, cette vitrine est remplie à bloc de détails à tel point qu’on n’a jamais fini d’être surpris. Par exemple, c’est seulement en étant accroupie que j’ai découvert ce singe pâtissier en arrière-plan. Du champagne, du thé et des gâteaux: que demander de mieux?

De l’eau solidifié, passons aux fonds aquatiques avec une mise en scène toute en mosaïques qui me rappelle l’Aquarium du Carnaval des Animaux.

Mon autre vitrine préférée, entièrement en noir, blanc et gris mis à part les lèvres et ongles rouges de l’institutrice. 300 morceaux de papier différents ont été nécessaires à la création de cette classe d’animaux.

Enfin, dernière vitrine sur la 5^ème Avenue, un atelier de menuiserie fou.

Moins spectaculaires mais tout aussi soignées, les vitrines des 57^ème et 58^ème Rues dévoilaient un gala d’équitation et des belles se faisant tirer le portrait.

This week the Elizabeth Taylor collection will be auctioned away by Christie’s in New York, benefiting a cause that was so dear to her heart, AIDS research. Thanks to my generous friend Lani, I had the chance to admire this impressive collection of jewelry, fashion and other precious items along with Sarah and Mariah. I am ashamed to say I have never seen a film starring Elizabeth Taylor but observing her belongings is enough to make you realize that she was a legendary actress and larger-than-life character.

The exhibition started with the presentation of Elizabeth Taylor’s most precious jewelry, among which this set by Bulgari. To illustrate the love the actress had for this brand, here are a few memorable quotes:

As you can see, Elizabeth Taylor was no ordinary jewelry lover. While actresses today burrow these accessories and wear them only for the red carpet, Taylor would collect and wear them unashamedly every day.

After the jewelry came the fashion collection with these elegant dresses from the late 1960s by Chanel, Tiziani and Dior (from left to right). Do you know Tiziani? This Rome-based brand had a certain Karl Lagerfeld as a designer at the time.

There were a lot of yellow dresses among Elizabeth Taylor’s collection, probably because the color complemented her fair complexion and raven hair so well. Sarah noticed how incredibly short the hemlines were in the late 1960s.

Do you think Liz liked feathers?

Elizabeth Taylor had an impressively large caftan collection; what you see in the 2 pictures of this post is just a tiny part of it. The actress launched this 1970s trend with her oriental and loudly-colored frocks.

It is interesting to know that Taylor decided to gain weight so nobody would offer her roles: she wanted to focus on her marriage to Burton instead of her career. Alas, it was a failed attempt: Liz did become curvier but she was still very much in demand.

The last room presented the items related to Elizabeth Taylor’s acting career, such as her two Academy Awards for Best Actress. As we exited Christie’s, Liz gave us one last look through her portrait by Andy Warhol. The artist rightfully said “It would be very glamorous to be reincarnated as a big ring on Elizabeth Taylor’s finger.”

Which memory of Elizabeth Taylor would you take from this collection? And which of her movies would you recommend me?

Demain marque le premier jour de la vente aux enchères de la collection Elizabeth Taylor par Christie’s à New York. Suite au décès de l’actrice en mars dernier, ses plus belles pièces de joaillerie et de mode ont été réunies pour servir la cause qui lui était si chère : la recherche contre le SIDA. Grace à ma généreuse amie Lani  j’ai pu admirer cette impressionnante collection accompagnée de Sarah et Mariah. J’ai honte de le dire : je n’ai jamais vu de film mettant en scène Elizabeth Taylor. Pourtant, il suffit d’observer ses biens pour comprendre qu’ils appartenaient à une légende du cinéma.

L’exposition s’ouvrait sur la fameuse collection de joaillerie d’Elizabeth Taylor dont cette parure Bulgari. Pour illustrer l’amour porté par l’actrice à cette maison, voici quelques citations :

Comme vous pouvez le comprendre, nous avions affaire à une collectionneuse acharnée. Alors que les actrices d’aujourd’hui ne portent de la joaillerie empruntée que le temps d’un red carpet, Elizabeth Taylor portait ses pièces au quotidien et sans réserve, encouragé par son cinquième mari Richard Burton.

Venait ensuite la collection de mode, dont ces robes si élégantes de la fin des années 1960. De gauche à droite : Chanel, Tiziani et Dior. Connaissez-vous Tiziani ? Cette maison romaine avait pour couturier à l’époque un certain Karl Lagerfeld. Encore du Dior de la fin des années 1960 dans de beaux tons printaniers. Elizabeth Taylor a aussi porté les créations de cette maison bien plus tard, comme cette robe rouge créée par John Galliano.

La collection comportait beaucoup de robes jaunes, probablement parce que cette couleur seyait bien au teint pâle et à la chevelure noire de l’actrice. Moi c’est la longueur des robes qui m’a étonnée. Imaginez-vous porter ce modèle aujourd’hui ; on vous reprocherait sans doute votre indécence !

Elizabeth Taylor avait une collection impressionnante de caftans, dont vous ne voyez ici qu’une toute petite partie. L’actrice aimait porter ces vêtements d’inspiration orientale aux tons parfois criards  dans les années 1970 et contribua à les rendre populaires. Il faut aussi savoir que l’actrice avait décidé de prendre du poids pour ne plus recevoir d’offres de rôles car elle voulait se concentrer sur son mariage avec Burton et non plus sur sa carrière.

Une montagne de bagages Louis Vuitton. Elizabeth Taylor avait pour habitude d’étiqueter ses bagages avec le mot « Mine ! » (le mien).

La dernière salle était dédiée aux souvenirs de cinéma, comme ses deux Oscars de la meilleure actrice. Le couloir menant vers la sortie était orné de ce célèbre portrait d’Andy Warhol. L’artiste dit à propos de son amie « It would be very glamorous to be reincarnated as a big ring on Elizabeth Taylor’s finger. » (Cela serait tellement glamour d’être réincarné en tant que grosse bague sur le doigt d’Elizabeth Taylor.)

Every time I travel to Paris, I always buy a Diptyque candle at Le Bon Marché. And this past year I’ve been lucky enough to win a few through the brand’s contests on Twitter. Needless to say my nightstand is invaded by the heavenly-fragranced jars. To my great pleasure, the Diptyque store on Bleecker Street reopened after important renovations and I was recently invited to a cocktail to view the changes.

I was pleasantly surprised by how warm and welcoming the place was: the Diptyque stores I usually visit are much more minimalistic in their design. And did you see that chandelier? Nice, no?

As I observed the paintings on the mirrored walls, I recognized symbols both of France and New York: Marianne, the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, Times Square, the Parisian gargoyles… A fitting décor for a French brand in the USA.

Even if the brand has successfully diversified its activities, the candles remain Diptyque’s most famous products. Do you have a favorite one? I love Mousse, Figuier, Tubéreuse and Jasmin. What’s more, there are plenty of ways to recycle the elegant jars, as my friend Notting Hill Girl showed on her own blog.

That said, I am also very fond of Diptyque’s fragrances, especially L’Ombre dans L’Eau which is perfect for this time of the season.  The brand has developed very practical travel-size fragrances like the solid perfumes. A salesperson made me try Philosykos with the roll-on and the highly concentrated oil left an intense long-lasting hold.

Here is the collection called 34 boulevard Saint-Germain as a tribute to the birthplace of Diptyque. Have you tried it? The fragrance is made of 40 raw materials, among which wood and balms developed around a chypre backbone. A noble and rich perfume that I very much fancy for the arrival of winter. To celebrate its 50^th anniversary (happy birthday Diptyque!), the brand has invited 3 noses to imagine their view of the 34 fragrance, as you can see on the Colette website.

Diptyque has been developing a beautiful body care line inspired by the art of travel. Spoiled with samples that night, I have been really impressed by the Precious Oils for Body & Bath for its gorgeous iris fragrance and texture.

Somewhere in between personal and home fragrance, the scented ovals gently diffuse their perfume in small spaces like closets and drawers. A nice idea for a gift!

Diptyque – 377 Bleecker Street – New York

Quand je passe à Paris, j’achète toujours une bougie Diptyque au Bon Marché. Et la marque m’a récemment offert deux mini bougies via leur concours sur Twitter. Bref, ma table de chevet est envahie par la maison parisienne ! Sa boutique de Bleecker Street à New York vient de rouvrir après d’importantes rénovations et j’ai été invitée à un cocktail la semaine dernière pour observer les nouveautés. J’ai été agréablement surprise par la chaleur du lieu : les boutiques Diptyque que j’ai l’habitude de fréquenter sont assez minimalistes dans leur décor. La sobriété traditionnelle de la marque laisse place ici à un festival de couleurs sur un mur de miroirs. Et vous avez vu ce chandelier ? Sympa, non ? En observant les peintures sur les murs j’ai reconnu des symboles à la fois français et new-yorkais : Marianne, la Statue de la Liberté, la Tour Eiffel, Times Square, les gargouilles parisiennes … Un décor bien symbolique pour une marque française installée aux Etats-Unis.

Ah, les bougies Diptyque! Même si la marque s’est bien diversifiée, elles restent ses produits les plus connus. Avez-vous un parfum préféré ? Moi j’adore Mousse, Figuier, Tubéreuse et Jasmin. En plus il y a plein de moyens de recycler les beaux verres des bougies, comme ma camarade Notting Hill Girl l’a démontré sur son blog.

Cela dit, j’aime beaucoup aussi les parfums Diptyque, surtout L’Ombre dans L’Eau qui est parfait pour ce début d’automne. En plus la marque a développé des formats très pratiques pour le voyage comme les solides. La vendeuse m’a fait essayer Philosykos en roll-on et la forte concentration de parfum donne un sillage vraiment durable. Diptyque a lancé il y a quelques années une belle gamme de soins pour le corps inspirée de voyages. Gâtée en échantillons, j’ai eu un véritable coup de cœur pour les Huiles Précieuses pour le Corps et le Bain avec son parfum divin d’iris et sa texture fondante.

A mi-chemin entre parfum pour soi et pour la maison, les palets parfumés diffusent lentement leur fragrance dans une armoire à linge par exemple. Une belle idée de cadeau !

Et vous, utilisez-vous des produits Diptyque ?

Oh, bonjour! It’s been a while again. My excuse this time? I had to find then move into my 4^th apartment in 11 months in New York (yes, you’ve read that right). Adieu Midtown roof terrace. I am now very happily settled in the wonderful neighborhood that is SoHo.

To add to my good mood, summer weather and sunshine have returned to New York for a bit. The warm temperatures and my sorting out souvenirs from France for my move reminded me of my summer vacation in Paris. Here are some of the bits and pieces that create the charm of one of my favorite cities in the world.

When I arrive in Paris by train from my hometown in Normandy, I am a few steps away from the Ladurée store on rue Royale. The perfect first stop, right? The windows are always an exquisite sight.

As I pass the Boulevard Haussmann and the Opera, I approach Place Vendôme, home to the world’s most famous jewelry houses. Napoleon keeps an eye on the square from his column.

I never tire of gazing at the precious jewelry in the windows. Once upon a time I dreamt of stuffed animals. Now I covet diamond Cartier panthers.

The Chanel jewelry store is located right across the former apartments of Gabrielle Chanel at The Ritz.

Chaumet had a magnificent exhibition in its offices to celebrate its 200 years of fine watchmaking.

For some reason I don’t like Louis Vuitton opening a store for its jewelry on Place Vendôme.

Heading towards the Jardin des Tuileries, I make two beauty stops at Guerlain and Annick Goutal and soak in the fun glamour of their windows.

The Jardin des Tuileries! One of my favorite places in Paris. So romantic. And what a view! This picture was taken from the Arts Déco, a museum I love and posted about here. An exhibition of Ralph Lauren’s car collection attracted a large crowd over the summer.

In the Jardin des Tuileries for good this time. A small summer fair is in full swing. The sound of laughter, scent of cotton candy and bright colors add to the exhilarating atmosphere.

Now we end our walk by making our way up the Champs-Elysées. French flags bordering the avenue remind us of Bastille Day celebrations and the military parade.

Is there a memory from your recent vacations that you hold on to?

Oh, bonjour ! Oui, je sais, cela fait un moment que je n’ai pas écrit. Ma bonne excuse cette fois ? J’ai dû trouver puis emménager dans mon 4^ème appartement en 11 mois à New York (oui, vous avez bien lu). Adieu terrasse sur le toit Midtown. Je suis maintenant heureuse d’être installée dans le merveilleux quartier de SoHo. Le retour du beaux temps ne fait qu’accroître ma bonne humeur. Les températures estivales et mes retrouvailles avec des souvenirs de France lors de mon déménagement me rappellent mes vacances à Paris. Voici quelques photos de lieux qui contribuent au charme de l’une de mes villes préférées au monde.

Quand j’arrive à Paris par le train de Normandie, je me trouve à quelques pas de la boutique Ladurée rue Royale. Les vitrines sont toujours exquises. En prenant le boulevard Haussmann, je m’approche de la place Vendôme où se retrouvent les plus grands joailliers du monde. Napoléon nous surveille de sa colonne. Je ne me lasse pas de contempler les bijoux exposés en vitrine. Il fut un temps où je rêvais d’animaux en peluche. Maintenant je veux des panthères de Cartier en diamants. La boutique de joaillerie Chanel est située juste en face des anciens appartements de Coco au Ritz. Chaumet organisait une exposition magnifique à l’occasion de ses 200 ans de création horlogère. Je n’aime pas beaucoup l’arrivée de Vuitton dans cette cour des grands.

En me rendant vers le Jardin des Tuileries, je fais deux arrêts beauté chez Guerlain et Annick Goutal en espérant que le glamour girly des vitrines déteigne un peu sur moi. Le Jardin des Tuileries ! L’un de mes endroits préférés à Paris. Si romantique, et quelle vue ! Cette photo a été prise des Arts Déco, un musée que j’adore et sur lequel j’ai écrit ici. L’expo de la collection automobile de Ralph Lauren a attiré beaucoup de monde. Dans le Jardin des Tuileries pour de bon cette fois. Une petite foire bat son plein. Les éclats de rire, le parfum de la barbe à papa et les couleurs vives rendent l’atmosphère encore plus joyeuse. Et nous terminons notre promenade en remontant les Champs-Elysées ornés des drapeaux du 14 juillet.

Avez-vous des souvenirs ou images de vacances auxquelles vous vous raccrochez ?

Who wouldn’t want to watch the craftsmen of Hermès create Birkin bags in the Parisian ateliers? This is exactly what you can experience through La Maison, an 11-volume 5-kilo tome published last July. 33 pictures from the books are on show at the Madison Avenue store until September 30^th and of course I had to feast my eyes on them last weekend.

Koto Bolofo gained full access to the company’s ateliers through Hermès’s former CEO Jean-Louis Dumas, discreetly observing the craftsmen at work for 7 years. It was the photographer’s idea to reveal the production process of the brand’s objects to the public. He rightly thought it would create a new sense of attachment, loyalty and admiration for the Parisian house. The images have been published in the quarterly magazine Le Monde d’Hermès distributed exclusively in Hermès stores and collected by many.

La Maison is a tome of 11 volumes published by Steidl. Each book is dedicated to a theme illustrating the Hermès brand identity: horses, saddles, the Kelly bag, clothes, perfume, the Bugatti Veyron, the gardens, the special orders, silk, John Lobb and the Emile Hermès collection. Signed copies of La Maison are sold in the flagship stores of Paris, New York and Toyko for $238 (175€) but you can also order the tome online.

Despite my love for Hermès and the beauty of the pictures, I will not be adding La Maison to my book collection because of its price. I will satisfy myself with the pictures I saw at the exhibition, which I wanted to share with you!

The special order department is the one that impressed Koto Bolofo the most because of the extravagant requests of the clients. One of them sent the dreadfully stinking cadaver of a crocodile he had shot himself to the atelier to get a bag made out of it. I noticed while flipping through the book that crowns were engraved in leather for orders made by royalty. The design is different whether the client is a prince, a duke, a count and so on.

The saddles are the most physically difficult objects of the brand to create and also the most secret department of the company. Koto Bolofo describes the production process as a wrestling match between the craftsman and the leather contrasting with the elegance of the finished product.

Have you had a look at Paris Mon Ami, the new Hermès website dedicated to their silk scarves? I’m not impressed, to be honest. It’s the sequel to the I Love my Scarf campaign I told you about here.

The perfume is the department that fascinated Koto Bolofo the most by the charismatic personality of Jean-Claude Ellena, the nose of the house who also created fragrances for Les Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. Few people know that Hermès is with Chanel the only major brand to create its fragrances with the best natural ingredients.

The famous orange Hermès bags. Do you know how the brand chose this color? Actually during World War II there was a shortage of materials and orange boxes were the only ones the company could find.

Which book from La Maison would you choose? I would no doubt pick the one on the Kelly bag and imagine that I own one sitting proudly in my closet while looking at the pictures.

Qui n’aurait pas envie de se transformer en petite souris pour observer les artisans à l’œuvre dans les coulisses d’Hermès ? C’est justement ce que vous permet La Maison, un coffret de 11 livres (et 5 kilos) paru en juillet. 33 photos extraites de ces ouvrages sont exposées au magasin de la Madison Avenue jusqu’au 30 septembre et bien évidemment j’y suis passée le week-end dernier.

Jean-Louis Dumas, qui dirigeait Hermès jusqu’en 2006, avait donné carte blanche à Koto Bolofo pour immortaliser les ateliers sur une période de 7 ans. C’est le photographe d’origine sud-africaine qui a convaincu le directeur de révéler la fabrication des objets au public pour créer une forme d’attachement et d’admiration. Ces images ont été reproduites dans le magasine trimestriel Le Monde d’Hermès distribué exclusivement en boutiques Hermès et considéré par beaucoup comme un collector.

La Maison est un coffret de 11 livres publiés par Steidl. Chaque volume est dédié à un thème de l’univers Hermès : le monde équestre, les selles, le sac Kelly, le prêt-à-porter, le parfum, la Bugatti Veyron, les jardins, les commandes spéciales, la soie, John Lobb et la collection Emile Hermès. Des copies dédicacées de La Maison sont vendues dans les flagships Hermès de Paris, New York et Tokyo au prix de $238 (soit 175€) mais vous pouvez aussi acheter les livres en ligne. Malgré mon amour pour Hermès et la beauté des photos, je ne pense pas ajouter La Maison à ma bibliothèque à cause de son prix. Je me contente des images vues à l’exposition que je voulais partager avec vous !

Le département des commandes spéciales est celui qui a le plus impressionné Koto Bolofo par les demandes extravagantes des clients. L’un d’eux avait envoyé aux ateliers le cadavre puant d’un crocodile qu’il avait lui-même tué en Afrique pour en faire faire un sac. J’ai vu en feuilletant le livre dédié à ce thème que des couronnes étaient gravées dans le cuir pour les commandes de familles royales. Le dessin change selon le rang (prince, duc, comte, etc.).

Les selles sont les objets les plus difficiles à créer physiquement et le département le plus secret de la maison. Koto Bolofo décrit leur fabrication comme une lutte entre l’artisan et le cuir qui contraste avec l’élégance du produit fini.

Avez-vous jeté un coup d’œil à Paris Mon Ami, le nouveau site d’Hermès dédié à la soie ? Je ne le trouve pas très réussi… C’est la suite de la campagne J’aime mon Carré dont je vous avais parlé ici.

Le parfum est le département qui a le plus fasciné Koto Bolofo par la personnalité du nez de la maison, le charismatique Jean-Claude Ellena. Je vous recommande fortement de lire le livre Que sais-je ? sur les parfums écrit par Ellena; c’est une mine d’or en informations dans ce domaine ! Il a aussi rédigé Journal d’un Parfumeur paru cette année.

Le fameux sac orange d’Hermès. Savez-vous pourquoi il est de cette couleur ? Lors de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, il y avait une pénurie de matériaux et les boîtes oranges étaient les seules que la maison pouvait se procurer.

New York feasted its eyes on the precious stones and designs of Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels. Hosted by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, it was the most comprehensive exhibition ever organized for the brand created in 1896. I was thoroughly impressed by the beauty of the jewelry, the technical prowess and creativity of the designers and craftsmen. It was a rare occasion to view these masterworks up close and many items were added to my wish list upon my visit.

The first room was an introduction to the technical and stylistic innovations of Van Cleef & Arpels, the mystery setting being the most famous example: metallic claws are made invisible, allowing the precious stones to take center stage and dazzle at will.

This necklace can be worn either way as the motifs are different on each half. You can view it unworn here.

I love the way the ruby and diamond Foliage necklace turns on itself.

The next room showcased Van Cleef and Arpels’s creativity with jewelry that surprised me by its power of transformation. This brooch for example was deservedly the star of the exhibition. The bird of sapphires, white diamonds and yellow gold carrying a 95-carat yellow diamond can turn into a pair of earrings (the wings), a brooch (the tail) and a pendant (big fat diamond) as you can see on the book image below. This item belonged to opera singer Ganna Walska.

Ever seen such fancy zippers? The Duchess of Windsor once suggested to the artistic directors of Van Cleef & Arpels they create a zipper that would look like a jewel to embellish her clothes. It took them 15 years to find the right technique to design this collection. The necklace can be worn as a bracelet if you remove the back of the jewel and pull up the zipper.

This choker and brooch can be assembled to make a necklace, or the necklace can turn into two bracelets. This jewel was a gift from the Aga Khan to the Begum Aga Khan in the 1970s.

Further along, the exhibition paid tribute to the relationship between jewelry and fashion. I love these Art Deco brooches, especially the one with emeralds (you can see it better here). It would look perfect on a tuxedo jacket, no?

A gallery highlighted the Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry worn by famous women, royalty and socialites. It brought me back to a time when celebrities such as Liz Taylor bought the most dramatic diamonds and wore them unashamedly.

I had already shared with you my favorite necklace in the exhibit here. It was actually a special order for an Egyptian princess. The central part of the jewel can be unclipped.

Another magnificent diamond necklace. This one belonged to Eva Péron. (You know, the Argentinean First lady portrayed by Madonna in Evita?)

This cuff can be assembled with another similar one to form a necklace. It belonged to Daisy Fellowes, the American heiress of Isaac Singer (that’s right, the sewing machines). As the editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar Paris, she had a major influence on fashion in the 1920s.

The exhibition ended on a tribute to Grace Kelly with the jewels given by Prince Rainier for their engagement in 1956. The house has since been “Official Supplier to the Principality”.  The necklace below also belonged to Princess Grace. You may recognize it as part of Van Cleef & Arpels’s most famous and emblematic collection, Ahlambra.  (Between you and me, with her Hermès Kelly bag and Van Cleef jewelry, I think Grace had great taste!)

L’exposition Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels a fait briller les yeux de New York par ses pierres précieuses. Installée au Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, c’était la plus grande rétrospective jamais dédiée à la maison fondée par les beaux-frères Arpels et Van Cleef en 1896. J’ai été impressionnée par les bijoux, le savoir-faire et la créativité des artisans-joailliers. C’était une occasion rare d’observer de près des pièces aussi magnifiques et j’espère transmettre mon émerveillement à travers ces photos !

La première salle de l’exposition était une introduction aux innovations techniques et stylistiques de Van Cleef & Arpels. Le serti mystérieux en est l’exemple le plus connu : cette exclusivité de la maison rend la monture métallique invisible, laissant les pierres jouer entièrement le jeu.

La salle suivante mettait en valeur la créativité de Van Cleef & Arpels avec une joaillerie surprenante par ses capacités de transformation.  Cette broche par exemple était l’une des pièces stars de l’exposition. L’oiseau de saphirs, diamants blancs et or jaune avec un diamant jaune de 95 carats au bec peut se métamorphoser de multiples façons. Comme le montre l’image du livre, ses ailes deviennent des boucles d’oreilles, sa queue une broche et le gros diamant jaune un pendentif. Ce bijou a appartenu à la cantatrice Ganna Walska. Voici une parure qui m’a surprise elle aussi. La Duchesse de Windsor a un jour suggéré aux directeurs artistiques de Van Cleef & Arpels de créer une fermeture éclair qui serait belle comme un bijou pour accessoiriser au mieux les vêtements. Ce n’est que 15 ans plus tard dans les années 1950 que la maison a trouvé la technique nécessaire pour lancer cette collection. Le collier peut se transformer en bracelet si on en détache l’arrière et qu’on remonte la glissière. Ce collier ras-du-cou et la broche peuvent être assemblés en un seul collier, ou le collier peut former deux bracelets. Il a été offert par l’Aga Khan à la Bégum Aga Khan dans les années 1970.

Plus loin, la relation entre la création joaillère et la mode était démontrée avec ces broches Art Déco. J’adore celle en diamants et émeraudes (on la voit mieux ici) alors que je ne porte jamais ce genre de bijou. Elle serait parfaite sur une veste de smoking, non ?

Enfin, l’exposition se terminait sur une galerie de bijoux ayant appartenu à des personnalités plus ou moins célèbres. Elle m’a ramenée à un temps révolu où les grandes de ce monde achetaient régulièrement sans complexe les plus belles pièces de joaillerie. C’est comme si le luxe était plus acceptable ou alors plus assumé qu’aujourd’hui ! Je vous avais déjà présenté mon bijou préféré de l’exposition ici. En fait ce collier de diamants avait été commandé pour une princesse d’Egypte. La partie centrale est détachable. Cet autre magnifique collier de diamants a appartenu à Eva Péron. (Vous savez, celle que Madonna a joué dans Evita? Elle était aussi la femme du dictateur argentin Juan Péron.) Voici un bijou étonnant. Il s’agit d’une manchette qui, assemblée à une pièce identique, forme un collier. Le bijou faisait partie de la collection de Daisy Fellowes, l’héritière américaine d’Isaac Singer (les machines à coudre). Rédactrice en chef du Harper’s Bazaar français, elle avait une influence majeure sur la mode des années 1920. Le bouquet final de l’exposition est la parure offerte par le Prince Rainier à Grace Kelly lors de leurs fiançailles en 1956. La maison est depuis le fournisseur officiel de la Principauté. Pas étonnant donc que le Prince Albert ait offert à Charlène un collier et une tiare Van Cleef & Arpels pour leur mariage. Le collier ci-dessous appartenait aussi à la Princesse Grace. Il fait partie de la collection la plus connue et emblématique de Van Cleef & Arpels, Ahlambra. (Entre nous, entre son sac Kelly et ses bijoux Van Cleef, elle avait du goût cette Grace !)

On the very first Fashion’s Night Out I was still living in Paris and went by avenue Montaigne to see what it was all about. Alas, the atmosphere was so dreadfully snobbish I bailed out. See, this is the thing that I love about New York: such events are much more accessible, you can easily mingle with people you admire and in this case they take place all over the city, not in one street only. And FNO was also a good excuse to visit to the newly-opened first-ever Ladurée store in the USA!

As soon as I got out of the office I headed towards Saks Fifth Avenue hoping I could meet actress Tilda Swinton. Instead, I saw three of the gorgeous women representing Estée Lauder: French model Constance Jablonski, Liu Wen and Joan Smalls.

I then walked up 5^th Avenue to see the new Louis Vuitton windows: the maids from the fall-winter 2011 show have replaced my beloved ostriches. To get over it, I indulged in an exquisite glass of wine at the Caudalie Spa.

Next stop: the Calvin Klein store on Madison Avenue. I was looking at pictures of the brand’s face Lara Stone when I noticed her standing right next to me. Imagine my surprise! Her shy demeanor and sweet smile contrasted deeply with the femme fatale she usually embodies.

Further up on Madison, Barneys had finally revealed their new windows celebrating Carine’s World, their collaboration with Carine Roitfeld. No clothing to be found here, only videos by Mario Sorrenti in which the ex-Vogue Paris editor in chief is seen talking (barely audibly) about her career and walking through Paris. Quite disappointing really.

One ice tea at Chanel and one dance competition at Lanvin later, I arrived at my secret destination of the night: Ladurée! Located on Madison Avenue between 70^th and 71^st Streets, it is next to the highly-awaited future Céline store.

You have no idea how happy I was to find this little bit of Paris in New York. The ribbons, pastel colors, little boxes and the retro refined charm of the place took me back to the French city in a heartbeat.

The store only sells macarons and none of the gorgeous pastries I showed you here. But I forgive Ladurée: their New-York macarons are absolutely divine. They melt in your mouth and their subtle taste is enchanting. I found them even better than in France and than my usual favorite Pierre Hermé! The cinnamon-raisin macaron that was created specially for Fashion’s Night Out was particularly exquisite. A second Ladurée store with a restaurant should open in New York by April 2012 in Soho.

I shared my first Ladurée macarons from New York with my friend Sarah from Style on the Couch over dinner at her East Village apartment. The perfect way to end the night! And you, how did you celebrate Fashion’s Night Out?

J’étais passée avenue Montaigne pour la toute première édition de la Fashion’s Night Out. Hélas, l’atmosphère snobissime m’avait fait fuir. A New York, je n’ai pas du tout eu ce sentiment : des événements beaucoup plus « accessibles » se déroulaient dans toute la ville. Et cette nuit était l’occasion de me rendre au premier magasin Ladurée des Etats-Unis tout fraîchement ouvert !

Dès ma sortie du bureau je suis allée au grand magasin Saks 5^th Avenue dans l’espoir de rencontrer l’actrice Tilda Swinton. A la place j’ai vu les égéries de la marque Estée Lauder : le mannequin français Constance Jablonski avec ses compères Liu Wen et Joan Smalls. J’ai ensuite remonté la 5^e Avenue pour voir les nouvelles vitrines Vuitton : les bonnes du défilé automne-hiver 2011 ont remplacé mes autruches adorées. Pour me remettre de mon chagrin, j’ai savouré un verre de vin exquis au spa Caudalie du Plaza. Etape suivante : la boutique Calvin Klein de Madison Avenue qui met à l’honneur son égérie Lara Stone. Quelle ne fut pas ma surprise de la retrouver en chair et en os juste à côté de moi ! Son air intimidé et son beau sourire contrastaient avec son image de femme fatale.

Un peu plus haut sur l’avenue, Barneys avait enfin mis en vitrine sa collaboration avec Carine Roitfeld. Aucun vêtement n’y figure, juste des installations vidéo comme cet étrange appareil montrant l’ex-rédactrice en chef de Vogue Paris parler de sa carrière et déambuler dans Paris. Assez décevant en fait.

Un thé glacé chez Chanel et un concours de danse chez Lanvin plus tard, je me retrouvais au but secret de ma soirée : le tout nouveau magasin Ladurée ! Située sur Madison Avenue entre la 70^e et la 71^ème rue, il est voisin de la future boutique Céline. Quel bonheur de retrouver ce petit bout de Paris à New York ! Les rubans, les couleurs pastelles, les petites boîtes et le charme rétro et raffiné de la maison me ramènent tout de suite à la Ville des Lumières. La boutique ne vend que des macarons et pas les magnifiques pâtisseries que je vous avais montrées ici. Mais je pardonne Ladurée : les macarons new-yorkais sont absolument di-vins. Ils fondent dans la bouche et leur goût subtil m’enchante. Ils sont encore meilleurs qu’en France et que chez mon chouchou Pierre Hermé ! Le macaron cannelle-raisin créé tout spécialement pour la Fashion’s Night Out était particulièrement exquis. Une deuxième boutique avec restaurant devrait ouvrir à New York en avril 2012 dans le quartier de Soho. J’ai partagé mes premiers macarons Ladurée de New York avec mon amie Sarah de Style on the Couch lors d’un dîner improvisé dans son appartement du East Village. La parfaite conclusion à cette soirée ! Et vous, comment avez-vous fêté la Fashion’s Night Out ?

Before leaving me all alone in New York, Papa and Maman Ritournelle had a day full of the best in art and fine dining the city has to offer. As you may recall from this post, we had planned to visit the MOMA earlier in their trip but ended up eating at the museum’s amazing restaurant instead. On the last day of their stay, we finally viewed the masterpieces hosted in the modern building, focusing on the painting and sculpture collection.

The way the works are displayed at the MOMA is perfectible in my opinion as it lacks logic: masterpieces are displayed next to works with little to no interest, from a different time period or basically without any connection. In short, the display lacks a certain harmony that would allow visitors to enjoy the works fully. That said, the MOMA is a place one must visit in New York anyway for its best art pieces which are for some of historical importance.

The MOMA holds an extensive collection of works by Picasso. I found the painting Girl before a mirror particularly striking. It shows Marie-Thérèse Walter, Picasso’s 23-year-old mistress, as a woman in the prime of her life and femininity. While the left side of her face is natural, the right side is interestingly very made up, like a mask for society and public matters. The reflection in the mirror gives us another side of reality: the character is in turmoil, the body distorted and the face darkened with a red tear.  Sadly, it is as if Picasso could foresee Marie-Thérèse’s fate as she took her own life 4 years after his death.

Monet’s Water lilies brought me back to my visit of Giverny last summer. Gazing at the reflection of the sky among the water lilies in the grand Japanese-style pond, it had made perfect sense to me why Monet had painted works of art bordering on abstraction like this one. The painter took 12 years to finish this huge canvas.

Another form of abstraction by American artist Jackson Pollock. He would paint his famous drip paintings with the canvas laying flat on the floor. “On the floor I am more at ease,” he said. “I feel nearer, more a part of the painting since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting.” When you stand in front of this work of art in the museum, you feel in the painting as well, especially since there is no focal point where the eye can truly rest.

If you love fashion, you will no doubt recognize this painting as the inspiration for Yves Saint Laurent to create his Mondrian dresses.

Talking about Saint Laurent, I discovered painter James Ensor at the exhibition of the designer’s art collection before it was auctioned away. Masks Confronting Death must have been inspired by the concept of the carnival during which people wear masks to hide their social identity and celebrate life in a grotesque way.

If this painting reminds you of another one (The Scream), that’s totally normal: they were both created by the same painter, Edvard Munch. In The Storm, the wind and darkness echo the feelings of the main character. A lone pale figure is seen clutching her head in despair; her white robe gives her an otherworldly presence and highlights the intensity of her inner turmoil. The house in the background is entirely lit with warm yellow lights, emphasizing how the group of people is excluded from the place of comfort.

And let’s end our visit with Francis Bacon’s Triptych, shall we? Hmmm, I admit some of these paintings were a bit gloomy. Time to cheer up with some fine dining!

Papa and Maman Ritournelle wanted to end their stay with a bang (and a splurge). Maman had the brilliant idea of heading to L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon located in the Four Seasons Hotel and we found ourselves in yet another French restaurant for the night.

Needless to say we were a bit intimidated by the understated luxury of the place and the owner’s reputation. However we were very happily surprised by how welcoming the staff was; a waiter walked us through the menu with savvy recommendations and punctuated the whole dinner with amusing anecdotes, creating a warm atmosphere.

Have you ever seen a fish so pretty? This I ate for my main course, and the delicate flower presentation made me think of Japan. Spot on: our waiter explained that Joël Robuchon had created his restaurants as a fusion between the French, Japanese and Spanish cuisines.  

Ta-da! The desserts! Let me introduce you to La Bulle (Maman), Le Mikado (moi) and Le Soufflé (Papa). Dining at L’Atelier was a wonderful experience which I highly recommend for special occasions. The refined menu is worthy of the chef’s reputation and the service excellent.

My parents could not leave New York without bidding adieu to their lady friend from Vuitton. This brings us to the end of the NY diary series which I hope you have enjoyed!

Avant de me laisser toute seule ici à New York, Papa et Maman Ritournelle ont eu une journée remplie avec la crème de la crème de la ville en art et gastronomie. Si vous vous rappelez ce billet, nous avions prévu de visiter le MOMA quelques jours plus tôt mais avions fini par déjeuner dans le très bon restaurant du musée. Finalement, nous avons admiré les chefs-d’œuvre dans ce bâtiment moderne en nous concentrant sur les collections de peinture et sculpture. La présentation des œuvres au MOMA laisse à désirer à mon avis car elle est sans logique : les chefs-d’œuvre côtoient des peintures sans grand intérêt, d’une époque différente ou tout simplement sans aucun rapport. Si le musée a délibérément souhaité ce mélange, celui-ci manque d’harmonie. Cependant, le MOMA est bien sûr un endroit à visiter absolument à New York pour les plus belle œuvres qu’il abrite.

Le MOMA est riche d’une collection impressionnante d’œuvres de Picasso. Jeune Fille Devant un Miroir m’a particulièrement touchée. La peinture met en scène Marie-Thérèse Walter, alors la jeune maîtresse du peintre. Le côté gauche de son visage est au naturel alors que le côté droit est très maquillé, presque comme un masque qu’elle aurait mis pour se montrer en société. Le reflet du miroir donne un tout autre aspect de la réalité : le corps difforme et le visage assombri barré d’une larme rouge. C’est comme si Picasso voyait le tourment intérieur de la jeune fille et prévoyait sa fin tragique.

Les nénuphars de Monet m’ont ramené à ma visite de Giverny. Lorsqu’on contemple le reflet du ciel dans la grande mare d’inspiration japonaise, on comprend pourquoi le maître a peint des œuvres au bord de l’abstraction. Monet a pris 12 ans pour travailler cette immense toile. Voici une autre forme d’abstraction par l’artiste américain Jackson Pollock ; il peignait ses fameuses toiles en les plaçant à plat sur le sol. « Sur le sol je suis plus à l’aise », disait-il. « Je me sens plus proche, plus une partie de la peinture puisque de cette façon je peux marcher autour, travailler des quatre côtés et être littéralement dans la peinture. » Quand vous vous tenez face à cette œuvre, c’est effectivement la sensation que vous ressentez, d’autant plus qu’il n’y a pas de point particulier sur lequel l’œil peut se reposer.

Le MOMA expose l’une des œuvres de Mondrian qui a inspiré à Yves Saint Laurent ses fameuses robes.  D’ailleurs, j’ai découvert le peintre James Ensor lors de l’exposition de la collection du couturier avant sa mise aux enchères. Masques confrontant la Mort a sans doute été inspiré par le carnaval lors duquel les gens portent des masques pour célébrer la vie de façon grotesque.

Si cette peinture vous rappelle Le Cri, c’est normal : elles ont toutes les deux été peintes par Edvard Munch. Dans La Tempête, le vent et l’atmosphère lugubre font écho aux sentiments du personnage central tenant sa tête dans un geste de désespoir. Sa robe blanche lui donne une un accent dramatique et hors de ce monde. L’intérieur de la maison à l’arrière-plan rayonne d’une lumière chaleureuse, excluant le groupe de personnes d’un possible réconfort. Et finissons maintenant notre visite par le Triptyque de Francis Bacon. Hmmm, j’avoue que certaines peintures n’étaient pas bien drôles. Ce pourquoi il est temps de se changer les idées !

Papa et Maman Ritournelle voulaient terminer leur séjour par un excellent repas et Maman a eu la brillante idée de se rendre à L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon dans l’hôtel Four Seasons. Nous étions au départ un peu intimidés par le luxe discret et la réputation du propriétaire mais le personnel nous a tout de suite mis à l’aise par son accueil. Un serveur nous a guidé dans le choix des plats et a ponctué le dîner d’anecdotes savoureuses. Le menu est inspiré de la cuisine française, japonaise et espagnole et les mets étaient très soignés dans leur présentation. When Savage Beauty opened in May, we admired the magnificent windows Bergdorf Goodman had designed around the exhibit. Now that the retrospective is over, it is time for me to share with you my pictures and impressions of New York’s biggest fashion event so far this year.

I headed to the Met first thing in the morning on a fine day with the Ritournelle parents. Luckily we did not wait one second to get inside. Two expressionless hostesses greeted us at the entrance, one of them wearing this dress made entirely of razor shells. The mood was set: darkness, romanticism and creations of a unique imagination were to be expected.

The first room showcased Alexander McQueen’s mastery of tailoring. Do you see how he reinvented the jacket, a typical menswear item, to create such singular, feminine and powerful pieces? A former Savile Row apprentice, McQueen used to say, “I spent a long time learning how to construct clothes, which is important to do before you can deconstruct them.” (All quotes were written on the exhibit walls and are excerpts from the amazing book on Savage Beauty.)

“When you see a woman wearing McQueen, there’s a certain hardness to the clothes that makes her look powerful. It kind of fends people off.” The sharp shoulders coupled with a tailoring sensually embracing the curves of the body became a signature of McQueen, giving birth to a woman both romantic and threatening. The cowl neck is another stylistic code of the house (as we saw on Pippa’s bridesmaid dress).

At this point I was starting to feel gently oppressed by the melancholic music, the lack of light and space when surprise! I was greeted by an army of mannequins wearing bondage leather masks in the next room. They were a bit unsubtle in my opinion and certainly contributed to Papa Ritournelle flatly qualifying the whole exhibit as “bizarre”.

Widows of Culloden – fall / winter 2006

However I was dazzled by four of the last dresses McQueen designed; they were featured in a show one month after the designer took his own life. The coat of duck feathers painted gold over the white silk skirt embroidered with gold thread is my favorite look from Savage Beauty.

A cabinet of curiosities showcased the accessories, all true works of art and craftsmanship. Savage Beauty would have been incomplete without Philip Treacy’s hats: they played a major part in the magic quality of the shows. Treacy would reveal his designs to McQueen at the last minute and Lee would be impatient and excited like a child before Christmas. As far as I’m concerned, I still wonder what kind of bird lays Swarovski eggs in a silver nest.

These regal designs embroidered with crystals are part of the fall 2008 collection. McQueen was inspired by a 600-year-old elm growing in his countryside garden: he imagined that a feral girl lived inside and once crept out at night to meet a prince and became his queen. McQueen traveled to India and came back to his studio fascinated by embroideries and Great Britain’s colonial past. Thus was born the collection The Girl Who Lived in the Tree.

Shipwrecked pirates and courtesans discovered a threatening paradise in Amazonia for the spring 2003 show. McQueen wanted to create a gown whose splendor had been devastated by the ocean. A technical masterpiece, the skirt of the Oyster dress is made of hundreds of organza circles and the whole silhouette seems to be dripping with water and seaweed. McQueen owed a lot to his years at Givenchy for this design: he learned to play with the lightness of materials and to soften his silhouettes at the couture atelier.

Here is the dress that closed the spring 2007 Sarabande show. On an organza base are embroidered silk and natural flowers. When it appeared on the runway, the crowd started clapping as flowers fell off the dress unto the floor, thinking McQueen had wanted to create this effect when it was truly an accident. The designer said of this design, “I used flowers because they die. My mood was darkly romantic at the time.”

McQueen was passionate about birds. This pheasant-feather dress from the Widows of Culloden collection is one among a multitude of designs paying tribute to them. “Birds in flight fascinate me. I admire eagles and falcons. I’m inspired by a feather but also its color, its graphics, its weightlessness and its engineering. It’s so elaborate. In fact I try and transpose the beauty of a bird to women.”

My second favorite dress from Savage Beauty is another mysterious silhouette from Widows of Culloden. I am impressed by the delicate work of embroidery and the incongruous antlers poked through a precious piece of lace. (McQueen himself was baffled he had done this to an item worth £2,000.) The design was inspired by the dress he had created for Sarah Burton’s wedding 2 years earlier.

Plato’s Atlantis, the last collection presented by Alexander McQueen, closed the exhibition with its notorious shoes / instruments of torture. I had already told you about it here when it was showcased in Bergdorf Goodman’s windows. “[This collection predicted a future in which] the ice cap would melt… the waters would rise and… life on earth would have to evolve in order to live beneath the sea once more or perish… Humanity [would] go back to the place from whence it came.”

Après vous avoir montré les magnifiques vitrines de Bergdorf Goodman sur Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty, voici mes photos et impressions sur la géniale rétrospective qui vient de se clôturer à New York. Je me suis rendue au Met un beau jour avec les parents Ritournelle dès l’ouverture du musée. Quel bonheur d’accéder à l’exposition sans attendre une seule seconde! Deux hôtesses à l’air farouche nous accueillaient ; l’une portait cette robe entièrement ornée de couteaux. Hum, je ne me sentais pas du tout menacée.

La première salle mettait en valeur le génie de la coupe d’Alexander McQueen. Vous voyez comment il réinventait la veste, habit d’homme, pour la rendre aussi singulière, féminine et forte en caractère ? Ancien apprenti de Savile Row, McQueen disait : « J’ai passé beaucoup de temps à apprendre à construire les vêtements, ce qu’il est important de maîtriser afin de pouvoir les déconstruire. » (Toutes les citations étaient inscrites sur les murs du Met et sont tirées du magnifique livre conçu à l’occasion de l’exposition.)  « Quand vous voyez une femme portant du McQueen, il y a une certaine dureté dans les vêtements qui la rendent forte. Ca peut en déconcerter certains. » Les épaules carrées mariées aux coupes épousant sensuellement les courbes du corps devinrent l’une des signatures de McQueen, donnant naissance à une femme à la fois romantique et menaçante. Le col bénitier était aussi un code stylistique reconnu de la maison (comme on a pu le voir sur la robe de Pippa).

Arrivée à ce stade de l’exposition, je commençais à être bien imprégnée de la musique lancinante, du peu de lumière et d’espace avec la foule. Et lorsque j’entrai dans la salle suivante, surprise ! Une armée de mannequins aux masques de cuir sado-maso m’accueillait. (Pas étonnant qu’à la sortie Papa Ritournelle lâcha que cette expo était tout simplement « bizarre ».) Heureusement je fus vite éblouie par ces quatre robes issues de la dernière collection créée par Alexander McQueen. La silhouette avec le manteau de plumes de canard peintes sur la jupe de soie blanche brodée au fil d’or est ma préférée de Savage Beauty.

Ensuite un cabinet de curiosités exposait les accessoires. Savage Beauty aurait été incomplète sans les chapeaux créés par Philip Treacy pour Alexander McQueen. De véritables œuvres d’art qui contribuaient largement à l’émerveillement des défilés. Treacy avait pour habitude de révéler ses créations juste avant à McQueen, excité comme un enfant à Noël. Moi je me demande toujours quel type d’oiseau sort des œufs Swarovski et du nid d’argent.

Ces ensembles de soie brodés de cristaux à l’allure impériale sont issus de la collection automne-hiver 2008-2009. Alexander McQueen s’était inspiré d’un orme vieux de 600 ans qui trônait dans son jardin : il imaginait qu’une fille sauvage habitait à l’intérieur et en sorti une nuit pour rencontrer un prince et devint sa reine. Un voyage en Inde plus tard, McQueen retourna à son atelier fasciné par les broderies et le passé colonial de la Grande-Bretagne, et la collection The Girl Who Lived in the Tree était née.

La collection printemps-été 2003 nous plongeait dans le naufrage d’un navire où pirates et courtisanes échouaient en Amazonie. McQueen avait voulu créer une robe dégoulinante de soie comme si l’océan l’avait ravagée. Véritable prouesse technique, la jupe de la robe Oyster est faite de centaines de cercles d’organza. McQueen doit beaucoup à son passage chez Givenchy pour cette création : c’est là qu’il a appris à jouer avec la légèreté des matières et à adoucir ses silhouettes.

Voici la robe qui a fermé le défilé de la collection printemps-été 2007 Sarabande. Sur une base d’organza sont brodées des fleurs de soie et naturelles. Quand elle est apparue, les spectateurs ont applaudi en voyant les fleurs se détacher et tomber au sol, pensant que c’était un effet désiré alors que c’était en fait un accident. McQueen avait utilisé des fleurs car elles meurent rapidement ; son état d’esprit était alors « sombrement romantique ».

Drôle d’oiseau! Issue de la collection Widows of Culloden, cette robe aux plumes de faisan symbolise l’amour de McQueen pour eux. Il s’était même initié avec sa muse Isabella Blow à la fauconnerie. « Les oiseaux en vol me fascinent. Je suis inspiré par les plumes, leur couleur, leur forme, leur légèreté et leur fonctionnement. C’est tellement sophistiqué. En fait j’essaie de donner la beauté d’un oiseau à la femme. »

Mon autre robe préférée de l’exposition, toujours de la même collection : je reste émerveillée devant le travail délicat de broderie et les curieux bois de cerfs transperçant une dentelle précieuse. (McQueen s’étonnait lui-même qu’il avait pu faire ça à un objet valant £2000.) Elle est inspirée de la robe que le créateur avait dessinée pour Sarah Burton à l’occasion de son mariage 2 ans plus tôt.

Plato’s Atlantis, la dernière collection présentée par Alexander McQueen de son vivant, clôturait l’exposition avec ses chaussures-torture. Je vous en avais parlé dans ce billet lorsqu’elle a été mise en avant en vitrine de Bergdorf Goodman. « Cette collection prédisait un futur dans lequel la calotte glaciaire fondrait… les eaux monteraient et… la vie sur Terre devrait évoluer pour survivre sous l’eau ou périr. L’humanité devrait retrouver l’endroit d’où elle est venue. »
